Affiliate links for the products on this page are from partners that compensate us (see our advertiser disclosure with our list of partners for more details). However, our opinions are our own. See how we rate insurance products to write unbiased product reviews.

Unlike many other pet insurance companies we review, PetPremium Pet Insurance lets you search for a policy across various providers, making it easy to compare quotes. While its website is easy to use, the sample quotes it provides weren't always accurate in our tests.

PetPremium Pet Insurance

PetPremium is an insurance comparison broker that connects pet owners with popular pet insurance providers. Currently, the company's homepage says it works with Figo, Pets Best, and Prudent pet insurance.

The quoting process starts with your zip code, quickly narrowing down the companies that cover your state. Like other broker sites, PetPremium does not underwrite insurance or pay claims. However, unlike similar sites, it says plans underwritten by United States Fire Insurance Company may be managed through its website.

Keep reading to see if using PetPremium is a good option for finding the best pet insurance company.

PetPremium Pet Insurance Cost

PetPremium offers the following filters for insurance plans:

  • Select individual insurance providers
  • Select your plan type: accident-only or accident-and-illness
  • Annual coverage tier: Unlimited, $1,000, $2,500, $3,000, $4,000, $5,000, $7,000, $7,500, $10,000, $15,000, $20,000, or $25,000
  • Reimbursem*nt tier per claim: 70%, 75%, 80%, 90% or 100%
  • Annual deductible: $50, $100, $150, $200, $250, $300, $350, $400, $450, $500, $550, $600, $650, $700, $750, $800, $850, $900, $950, $1,000, $1,100, $1,200, $1,300, $1,400, $1,500, $1,600, $1,700, $1,800, $1,900, $2,000, $2,100, $2,200, $2,300, $2,400, $2,500
  • Payout limit per incident: None or $500

For the purposes of price comparison, we requested a quote with $10,000 annual coverage, 80% reimbursem*nt per claim, no payout limit per incident, and an annual deductible of $500 for our favorite imaginary three-year-old Golden Retriever.

These are the insurance plans that met our criteria, as well as the monthly dollar amount:

Insurance Provider and Plan TypeMonthly Dollar Amount
Figo Preferred$30.65
Fetch$40.14
Pet Partners Companion Care$51.20
ASPCA Pet Health Insurance Complete Care$55.26

The average cost of pet insurance for both accident and illness coverage is about $49, so PetPremium returned options both below and above this average rate.

PetPremium Pet Insurance Plans

PetPremium works with a number of pet insurance providers within the United States such as ASPCA, Figo, Fetch, PetPartners, and Pets Best. We also have reviews for these individual pet insurance providers:

  • ASPCA Pet Insurance Review
  • Figo Pet Insurance Review
  • Fetch Pet Insurance Review
  • PetPartners Pet Insurance Review
  • Pets Best Pet Insurance Review

Pet insurance shoppers can input their pet's age, breed, and relevant health information into the online quote generator and receive multiple estimates in seconds. The generator is simple and easy to use, and only requires your basic contact information on a single input form.

We were able to pull up quotes for all available providers to compare rates and plans. However, more often than not, we found that our sample quotes were returned with no offers or limited offers that didn't match what these companies offer in certain states.

Our trusty imaginary Golden Retriever Caboodle got quotes from all Pet Premium partners we're aware of. However, we did not get any quotes for a 5- to 7-year-old mixed breed dog or mid-sized mix breed dog in multiple states. A similar yellow lab only got one quote from Fetch.

Based on the quote we received, some of the coverages offered were not up to date based on what a provider might list on its own site. For example, our trusty Caboodle was given a $10.01 premium for $2,500 in coverage with 70% reimbursem*nt and a $1,000 deductible. However, ASPCA pet health insurance's website only offers deductibles up to $500. In addition, we were offered tiers of coverage ranging from $1,000 to unlimited while ASPCA pet health insurance's website only offers options for $2,500, $4,000, $7,000, and $10,000 in annual coverage.

Of the greatest concern to us was the pricing. We would expect to see small temporary discounts to incentivize buyers. However, the rates returned with PetPremium were cut in half compared to the vendor sites we checked.

We stopped short of entering payment information on a plan we chose because it is not offered by ASPCA pet health insurance. So we cannot tell if the site would've given us an error, if it communicates with the provider at the time of sale, etc. However, we did not see any signs the site would stop before taking payment and potentially issuing "proof" of a policy.

Additional Coverage Options (Riders)

Each insurance provider that partners with PetPremium offers different add-ons, so you'll need to click on the "plan details" dropdown for each quote to find out what options are available with the plan you select.

Some standard aspects of pet insurance add-ons may include:

  • Primary care visits
  • Spaying/neutering
  • Dental cleanings
  • Parasite exams and treatments
  • Vaccinations
  • Microchipping
  • Deworming

You can select optional add-ons once you click on "enroll" before checking out on the payment page.

Compare PetPremium Pet Insurance

See how PetPremium compares to two other options for pet insurance coverage: Healthy Paws and Pumpkin.

PetPremium vs. Healthy Paws Pet Insurance

Healthy Paws Pet Insurance offers unlimited annual insurance payouts, a choice between 70% or 80% reimbursem*nt per claim, and annual deductibles of either $250 or $500. When priced for our sample dog Caboodle, we received quotes between $41 per month to $55 per month.

PetPremium's partners were able to match all of those criteria, with a far wider range of prices. At the low end, the PetPartners Companion Care policy offered a plan with 70% reimbursem*nt and $500 deductible for just $15.37 per month. On the high end, ASPCA's Complete Coverage policy costs $99.62 per month for an 80% reimbursem*nt plan with a $250 annual deductible.

Healthy Paws does not offer a wellness policy add-on. In contrast, several of PetPremium's insurance partners offer wellness coverage for an extra cost.

Healthy Paws Pet Insurance Review

PetPremium vs. Pumpkin Pet Insurance

Pumpkin offers multi-policy discounts for insuring multiple fur babies, and reimburses a flat 90% of costs on all eligible claims. A quote for a Golden Retriever cost $93 per month with a $500 annual deductible, and $117 per month for a plan with a $250 annual deductible.

In contrast, PetPremium offered plans from its partners that ranged as low as $43.38 monthly with a $500 deductible (from Pets Best Essential), to as high as $117.19 monthly with a $250 deductible (from ASCPA Complete Coverage).

Why You Should Trust Us: How We Reviewed PetPremium

Here at Insider, we review companies based on how easy it is to purchase a policy that fits a customer's needs, as well as the claim filing process. PetPremium earns top marks for the first, but we're dubious about its ability to follow through on the second.

PetPremium is unique among pet insurance purveyors in that the company sells policies underwritten by other companies. It's relatively easy to purchase a plan to fit any price point or pet need, especially since there are dozens of customizable filters for deductible, reimbursem*nt amount, and annual limit.

However, the company may be difficult for customers to get a hold of in the event that they need to file a claim. Customer reviews are sparse, and the few that do organically exist complain about negative experiences with the company.
