Well, that'll do us for today. I think there's another England match on somewhere that may be dominating headlines tonight? Catch all the team news and build-up from that one here.

We'll be back from 10:30 BST tomorrow to see what day two has in store for us. Will England press ahead, or will there be a West Indies fightback?

Until then, here's Stephan Shemilt's match report from an eventful first day.

There are highlights on BBC Four and iPlayer now, and below.

    Bye for now!

  2. 'I can't complain'published at 19:18 10 July

    19:18 10 July

England seamer Gus Atkinson speaking to Test Match Special: "The first wicket wasn't exactly where I wanted to bowl it, but I can't complain. A bit of relief to get the first one out of the way quickly.

"We struggled a bit after lunch, we went for a few runs. That over turned it a bit, I felt pretty good and it came out well. A few wickets quickly and happy days. You just go with the flow, do what you think is best and thankfully it came off for me today.

"I had my dad, brother, sister and my aunt here. It was very cool."

On Anderson's retirement: "I said to Brooky before play that the focus was on Jimmy, going out with no pressure. [He's said] nothing out of the ordinary, just go out and do your thing. But being around with him on and off the pitch has been pretty special."

On his name being on the honours board: "I walked in after the innings and it's right where I'm sitting, so that was pretty special."

    Michael Vaughan
Former England captain on Test Match Special

Gus Atkinson looks the real deal. He looks great.

Getting that wicket second ball, I can only imagine the confidence that gives you as a bowler.

We know Rob Key is looking for pace. If you want to win a five-match series against India or Australia, you're going to need probably five quicks that you can rotate across the five matches.

The hope for England by next summer is that they've got a group of bowlers that you don't know who you're going to leave out.

  4. Postpublished at 19:13 10 July

    Carlos Brathwaite
Former West Indies all-rounder on BBC Sounds

We know West Indies play their best cricket with their backs against the wall.

If this goes the way we expect, they'll have an extra couple of days to prepare for Nottingham and Birmingham.

It's not all doom and gloom. It's horrible day's cricket for West Indies but it's not the end of the world.

  5. 'It was a bit of a blur'published at 19:11 10 July

    19:11 10 July

England seamer Gus Atkinson speaking to Sky Sports: "A bit of nerves this morning. It was pretty special being in the Long Room with the applause for Jimmy. Ball in hand - all good.

"[Ollie Pope, presenting Atkinson's cap] said we'd played with each other since under-11s, and it was so great to have my family in the huddle. I can't remember much of it, it was a bit of a blur! My family did all the background work, so to have them in the crowd was very special.

"I can get the ball to nip. I don't focus too much on where my seam is, just where it's landing. With the slope I thought I could get a bit of nip down the hill, I thought you had to hit the pitch hard to get something out of it."

On the team environment: "It's very relaxed, similar to Surrey, it allows you to go out and be the best cricketer you can be. I really enjoyed going out being able to express myself."

    19:09 10 July

England were brilliant in all three aspects, a very professional performance.

Harry Brook and Ollie Pope both batted nicely but also treated us to a couple of cracking catches.

Gus Atkinson, what a day to remember for him. He bowled with good accuracy, pace and consistency. Got good movement.

Just a dream debut. He's put England in a wonderful position.

That's the perfect day from an England perspective.

West Indies made quite a good start, it was nervy with Jimmy Anderson in his last game, but when they started to lose one or two wickets, you could see the inexperience and the lack of game time required to play in these conditions.

We want West Indies to come to these conditions and compete. They're not the standard of an England side in these conditions but they've just got to have more game time.

The pre-match build-up was all dominated by Jimmy Anderson's last Test, but it was the man at the opposite end of the spectrum who flourished in front of the Lord's crowd.

Gus Atkinson, on Test debut, finished with astonishing figures of 7-45 as West Indies collapsed from 88-3 to 121 all out.

    A day he'll never forget.

That is a decent day for England. The first day of this Test match summer. An interesting day dominated by England.

Harry Brook showing plenty of intent.

  11. Close of play - Eng 189-3published at 40 overs

    40 overs

    That'll do for today.

Harry Brook survives the last over of the day from Jason Holder, and that concludes a very dominant opening day for England.

Brook finishes unbeaten on 25 from 29 balls, while Joe Root with a rather more watchful 15 from 39.

  12. Eng 185-3published at 39 overs

    39 overs

Gudakesh Motie whizzes through his over so quickly, that we'll have time for one more before the close of play.

  13. Eng 183-3published at 38 overs

    38 overs

An economical over from Jason Holder but it's not enough for West Indies. They need a flurry of wickets, and fast.

By the end of day one, England are already going to be in full control of the game.

  14. Eng 180-3published at 37 overs

    37 overs

First spell of spin for the day, as Gudakesh Motie comes into the attack.

There wasn't time for England's spinner Shoaib Bashir earlier, but it's a decent start with just one from it. But England's lead of 59, with seven wickets in hand, is already looking pretty dangerous for the West Indies.

Harry Brook has come out and played some shots - he is looking silky!

    He looks in sparkling nick.

  16. Eng 179-3published at 36 overs

    36 overs

    Hello!

Harry Brook plays an audacious pull shot from a good length delivery, just flying over mid-on before plugging in the outfield for a couple.

He gets away with it, but it's an unusual choice of shot given how well he was playing straight, just came out of nowhere.

And then he unveils a beautiful clip off his legs for four through mid-wicket. The timing is immaculate, you can just hear the ping off the bat.

Just a glide from Harry Brook. He's come out and played lovely, he just got on top of that one and played it through the gully.

  18. Eng 170-3published at 35 overs

    35 overs

    Lead by 49

Oh, wonderful. Harry Brook's got it all.

He helps himself to four more off Holder with a controlled, guided edge down to deep third.

    Timing.

Cricviz do an expected score for the deliveries each team has faced (think football and xG). England, at 164-3, are overperforming compared to their expected score of 98-4, but West Indies' 121 all out is below their expected 113-4.
